Madeira 2017 – Day 5

Boat tour to the Desertas islands
Today we took a boat tour to the Desertas islands. They are a collection of three uninhabited islands 15 miles to the south east of Medeira. They are home to monk seals, birds and spiders. On the way we saw Pilot whales and anchored in a sheltered bay created by a massive rock slide.

Island tour
Whilst on land we had a tour of the ranger’s base camp and learnt about the islands. We took pictures of the information boards as well as some of the local instects.

The long way back
The journey back took 2.5 hours as we were against the tide and wind, but this gave us a chance to see both Bottle nose dolphins and Bryde whales.
